The Dells of the Wisconsin River and the surrounding natural areas are a unique resource for area visitors. We encourage visitors to the Dells area to use and enjoy the Wisconsin River and the other natural areas our the Dells area.
Leave No Trace
The Stewards encourage visitors to the Dells of the Wisconsin River and surrounding natural areas to practice "Leave No Trace" principles:
Plan Ahead - We encourage you to think ahead and use common sense. Wear sensible shoes and clothing, and take food, water and equipment you will need, as well as the means to dispose of waste properly.
Use Trails and Stay in Designated Areas - State natural areas and conservancy areas have marked trails and designated areas. Please don't wander off -- the plant you crush might be an endangered species.
Dispose of Waste Properly - We encourage you to take out everything you bring in, and leave nothing behind.
Leave What You Find - We encourage you to leave plants, rocks and other natural features undisturbed for future visitors.
Minimize Fire Impact - We encourage you to use lightweight camp stoves, instead of fires, whenever possible. If you build a fire, we suggest using an existing fire ring, a fire pan or a mound fire.
Respect Plants and Wildlife - We encourage you to leave plants alone and stay a good distance away from wildlife.
Be Considerate of Others - We encourage you to be considerate of other hikers and visitors by minimizing noise and disruption.
River Safety
The Stewards encourage visitors to use the Wisconsin River safely and appropriately.
The Dells of the Wisconsin River present challenges to boaters and other river users, because of the many types of watercraft -- tour boats, jet boats, pontoon boats, fishing boats, canoes, kayaks -- using the river and wide variety of recreational activities on the river.
We encourage you to familiarize yourself with Wisconsin boating laws, safe boating practices and local conditions before using the river.
